Innsbruck City Guide
Innsbruck is situated in the middle of Austrian Alps. An enchanting
historic center and a number of charming coffee shops invite to
discover Tyrolean flair and culture. Nearby mountains are easily
accessible by public transport and guarantee impressive scenery
and beautiful walks and hikes.
The 'Goldene Dachl', a renaissance oriole decorated with
gold painted copper shingles, is a major sight of the historic center.
In 1665 Empress Maria Theresia built the Triumph Gate and
expanded the 'Hofburg', the residence of the Hapsburgs in
Innsbruck.
In 1805 Napoleon's armies defeated Austria and Tyrol was given
to the Bavarians. The Tyrolean resistance fighter Andreas Hofer
managed to free Tyrol from the German and French troops for a period
of time. Andreas Hofer is a Tyrolean National hero and a large painted
round panorama picture, the "Rundgemälde",
was dedicated to his fight on the Mount Isle.
